Uganda
Self-Help Projects

Poverty is rampant in Uganda, but for people with AIDS, the problem is particularly acute. The treatment medications are expensive, and many people with AIDS have a large number of dependents, often left behind by other AIDS victims. Adding to the problem are the prejudice toward people with AIDS, which makes it difficult to get a job, and frequent absences from work due to illness, which makes it difficult to retain a job.

To assist people with AIDS in making a living wage while allowing for their special needs, VOICA is sponsoring individual self-help projects. VOICA provides an individual with a small grant to set up a home-based business, such as making bricks, weaving mats, or making handcrafts. These self-help projects are designed to become a sustainable source of income for the individual and his or her dependents.

The cost of one self-help project is $250.
